LOTS & HOTS

When building an online course, no matter what age group, keep in mind LOTS and HOTS...no that is not Lot and his hot wife!   You want to move students through the lesson hitting Lower Order Thinking Skills and Higher Order Thinking Skills...from basic "give back" information to create, evaluate, or produce.

Print Bloom's Taxonomy

Where on Bloom's Taxonomy  would these activities fall?

1.  Reflective Meditation:
Creating a "safe" and private blog through your settings can provide an environment where students can really discuss what they think and feel.  Bring current event topics to the table to see how faith fits into our daily lives.  Here, the big story that occurred at the time of this course was the earthquake in Haiti, which today is still suffering.  Many people questioned the existence of God because of this.  Teenagers need to be able to understand where God is, even in disasters.  Here is the page from the "Finding God" lesson that tapped into this:
Finding God in Disasters

2.  Brainstorming Activities
Sometimes quick, simple answers can create a place where students feel they can contribute easily.  Here, the lesson focused on "Who is Jesus?" and names that were used to describe Jesus.  What came next? Well, how does Jesus come  into your life?  What say you?
We are One...Who Is Jesus?

3.  Just the facts!  Sometimes you just need to know simple facts.  Here was just a question to see if they remembered a Bible fact:
We are One:  We are Many Parts
Notice, this was not "tested", however, by the time they scrolled down to see the answer, they probably either realized they didn't know, or they were correct.

4. Prayer
Of course one of the areas we, as catechists, want to help develop with our students is the sense of conversation with God through prayer.   Here is an example of building a community of prayers:
We are One in Prayer

5.  Producing their own work allows the student to work creatively and use their knowledge of the subject.
Final Project
Students can use a wide variety of tools for projects including creating their own online poster on the subject at hand, a wordle rather than a "paper",  comic strips, movie clips,  avatars, the sky is the limit!
